The biggest factor that influenced my decision to pursue OBGYN was working with Dr. Danny Shaban during my summer breaks in college. Prior to this point, I assumed that I would pursue a field in Cardiology. The fast-paced field had me hooked instantaneously. Every women had a unique story to tell and it also gave me an opportunity to influence the lives of young adolescent females.

Discuss a role model or mentor who influenced your career choice:

My uncle Dr. Naim Bouhussein and cousin Dr. Danny Shaban. Both of them are passionate to their careers and their families. The devotion that they have to providing excellent care to their patients is inspiring.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I see myself living in Charlotte with a thriving practice. I have joined a fantastic group in which I will continue to grow and develop. The plan is start volunteering in the local high schools to mentor high school teens.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?

For the undergrads interested in medicine, stay positive and do not surround yourself by negativity. You are not obligated to only stick to science courses to be accepted in the medical field. Remember to get involved with research early and volunteer opportunities that you truly enjoy.

For medical students, remember not to take everyday for granted. You have been given an opportunity that many people do not achieve. Ask others for help and remember to accept criticism graciously. This is the time in which you are able to mess up without any real repercussions. Ask questions and volunteer answers!

For residents, remind yourself everyday why you chose to go medicine. Accept criticism graciously. Avoid surrounding yourself with negativity. Find an activity that you enjoy and stick with it for your own personal wellness. Try yoga! It is amazing (I wish I had started it earlier)!

Tell us a little bit about your hobbies outside of your field:

I am recently married so I love spending time with my husband We love to hike, exercise, and spend time with family.
