MEET THE PROFESSIONAL
November 2017

Mr. Teo Masri

Mr. Teo Masri is a Mechanical Engineer at the Boeing Company in the Aerospace and Defense Division working on integrating and testing commercial and defense spacecrafts. Teo is the responsible Vehicle Engineering authority, providing technical direction during different build phases of the spacecraft. Also, he provides liaison engineering to manufacturing, planning, and quality to ensure design intent and requirements are maintained during all phases of mechanical assembly, integration, test and launch. He has performed and directed sub-system and system-level flight mechanical testing on moving components to ensure mission assurance. Teo is hands on– solving anomalies by leveraging experience and knowledge to provide team members with technical solutions as well as provide team members with access to technical resources at Boeing to ensure technical excellence for their engineering products and services.

Mr. Masri is a supporter of professional networking and our mentoring program within our community. We are very excited to feature him as our professional in this month’s “Meet the Professional” series.

Below are a few questions to help facilitate this interactive connection. At the end of the page you will have an opportunity to post your own questions for Mr. Masri.

……

Describe your current Occupation & Degree/s and Universities.

  • Executive MBA from The Anderson School – University of California, Los Angeles
  • B.S in Mechanical Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles

Patents:

  • 8,417,469 – Angular Force Measurement – 2013.

Created a digital force gauge that can measure force and angle relative to time and location in a tridimensional space to monitor performance of a deploying appendage. The instrument uses a gyroscope to track changes in position giving the user performance data on mechanism’s health and records mechanism performance through its range of motion.

  • 8,632,036 – Integrated articulating thermal isolation system and method – 2014.

Created a “plug and play” spacecraft mechanism that includes the thermal shielding blankets and wire harnesses to enable user to fully test “Flight Like” mechanism performance prior to integration. Doing this saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in serial testing during the spacecraft build.

Discuss a moment or turning point in your life that led you to your career path:

Growing up, I always enjoyed taking things apart to see how they work. I always knew I wanted to be a Mechanical Engineer. In my final year at University, in my Senior Design Project class, my professor asked us why we wanted to be mechanical engineers; although many answered to “design” machines, my reply was to work “hands on” on machines. The professor was not pleased with my answer and suggested that I might want to consider becoming a technician, and even suggested I should not be an engineer. I was devastated thinking that I had no idea what I was getting myself into and that I might have made a mistake with my career choice.  Today I am happy to tell you that I am one of the few engineers in the world that gets to work “hands on” on spacecrafts and rockets. Furthermore, I serve as an adviser at my old University Senior Design Project class, representing the Boeing Company, where I mentor students. I make it a point to let these students know about all their possibilities as future engineers.

The way I see it, there are two types of engineers. The “hands on” and the “theoretical” type; both of whom are indispensable. There are no wrong answers as a mechanical engineer you can work in many fields including automotive, medical, food, space, marine among many others. You can even start fields that don’t yet exist!

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?

My advice to any mechanical engineering student is to figure out what type of engineer you want to be and plan your path to get there. And don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise!
